Statement of Faith
Pastorly exists to serve churches that preach and teach the Word of God. This statement sets out the beliefs Pastorly is built on. It reflects the historic Christian faith shared across the evangelical tradition, and it is not tied to any one denomination.
The Bible
The Bible is the inspired Word of God, without error in all that it teaches. It is sufficient for faith and life, and it is the final authority over every human word, including everything Pastorly produces.
2 Timothy 3:16–17; 2 Peter 1:20–21; Isaiah 40:8
God
There is one God, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each is fully God, equal in power and glory.
Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14
Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and lived a sinless life. He died on the cross for our sins, rose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, and will return in glory.
John 1:1, 14; Matthew 1:18–23; Hebrews 4:15; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4; Acts 1:11
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, gives new life to those who believe, and lives within every Christian. He opens our understanding of Scripture and produces his fruit in the lives of God’s people.
John 16:8; John 3:5–8; Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 2:12–14; Galatians 5:22–23
Humanity
God created every human being in his image, male and female, and every person is to be treated with dignity and respect. Marriage is the lifelong union of one man and one woman. Through Adam’s sin, all humanity has fallen and stands guilty before God, unable to save itself.
Genesis 1:27; Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4–6; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12
Salvation
Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Jesus died in our place, bearing the penalty for our sin, and all who repent and trust in him are forgiven, made right with God and given eternal life.
Ephesians 2:8–9; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24; Romans 5:1; John 14:6
The Church
The church is the body of Christ, made up of all who belong to him. Christ gave his church the task of preaching the gospel, making disciples, and observing baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
1 Corinthians 12:12–13; Ephesians 1:22–23; Matthew 28:18–20; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26; Acts 2:42
The Last Things
Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly. He will raise the dead and judge the world in righteousness. Those who belong to him will live with God forever in the new creation.
Acts 1:11; John 5:28–29; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 21:1–4
How this shapes Pastorly
Pastorly is open to every church. On matters where faithful churches differ, such as the mode of baptism, church government, spiritual gifts and views of the end times, it follows the pastor and his tradition.
Aide, Pastorly’s study and research assistant, will help with study, research and questions of every kind, including explaining views and traditions that differ from this statement. On the core truths set out here, Aide speaks from the convictions of this statement and will not affirm teaching that contradicts them.
The Nicene Creed
Pastorly affirms the Nicene Creed as a faithful summary of the Christian faith.
We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made. For us and for our salvationhe came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Maryand was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
“Catholic” here means universal: the whole church of Christ in every place and time.
